It is believed that these hills were named after the demon king Banasura, who was the son of king Mahabali. It is the biggest earth dam in the country and is ranked second in Asia. The dam lengthens to a spacious part with crystal clear flow of waters.
Wayanad thirunelli temple: The Thirunelli Temple, devoted to Lord Vishnu, is situated beneath the Brahmagiri Hills in a valley. The Edakkal caves: Twenty five kilometers away from Kalpetta lays two caves which showcases nature’s skill and philosophy on architecture. These caves are located 1,200 m above the sea level on Ambukutty Mala. The name ‘Edakkal’ literally means ‘a stone in between’. Here you can see a cave formed by a heavy boulder straddling a fissure in the rock. The Stone Age carvings of Edakkal are rare and are the only known examples from south India. Over this fissure another big rock has fallen forming a roof. From the caves one can also trek to the top of Ambukuthi mala
